![]() Back in the 17th century in this alternate timeline, prominent mathematician and scientist Christiaan Huygens changed the face of the world by using magic to develop an army of clockwork automatons capable of intelligent thought but are enslaved to their masters through a series of geasa. This time we see humble French metallurgy pitted against the demonic alchemy of the Dutch, in a story set in the early 1900s. Now Tregillis returns to alternate history in The Mechanical, outdoing himself once again with an inventive blend of mind-blowing fantasy, history, and existential philosophy. That book was a bit of a departure to say the least, but it also solidified Tregillis in my mind as a talented visionary, definitely a rising star to watch. Then In 2013 I picked up Something More Than Night, a futuristic urban fantasy-type metaphysical hard-boiled detective noir story about angels. Like many fans of Ian Tregillis, I was first introduced to his work with the Milkweed Triptych, a series about British warlocks versus Nazi super-soldiers in an alternate history of World War II. ![]()

He started to write stories, plays, and essays in earnest – a long "sequel" to Man and Superman made him consider himself to be 'Shaw's natural successor.' After two unfulfilling jobs – one as a laboratory assistant at his old school – he drifted into the Civil Service, but found little to occupy his time. His discovery of George Bernard Shaw's work, particularly Man and Superman, was a landmark. But by the time he left school at sixteen, his interests were already switching to literature. By the age of 14 he had compiled a multi-volume work of essays covering many aspects of science entitled A Manual of General Science. At the age of eleven he attended Gateway Secondary Technical School, where his interest in science began to blossom. Wilson was born on 26 June 1931 in Leicester, the first child of Arthur and Annetta Wilson. Wilson called his philosophy "new existentialism" or " phenomenological existentialism", and maintained his life work was "that of a philosopher, and (his) purpose to create a new and optimistic existentialism". ![]() He also wrote widely on true crime, mysticism and the paranormal, eventually writing more than a hundred books. Colin Henry Wilson (26 June 1931 – 5 December 2013) was an English writer and novelist. ![]() ![]() I don't know that their MV is directly based off of this short story. What the MV says to me is simply that suffering does not last forever, it has an end. It's possible to be happy and sad at the same time, and this happens to be exactly how Spring Day makes me feel. For me, what BTS is saying is that suffering and happiness exist side by side in life, which I agree with. I think "The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas" asks if we can accept suffering as the price of our happiness, but more essentially, I think it asks if happiness can even exist without suffering. I take this to heart with BTS's music videos. It may have no definitive reading." The book became a bestseller and is considered a classic of modern Dutch literature. His first novel, De zwarte met het witte hart (1997), translated as The Two Hearts of Kwasi Boachi, was the story of two Ashanti princes, Kwame Poku and Kwasi Boachi, who were taken from today's Ghana and taken to the court of the Dutch king Willem II in 1837. He was also briefly an opera singer at De Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam.
